Tabernas Desert

Ancient marine basin, Tabernas Desert is one of the most valuable natural areas, incalculable geological value which opens to the visitor a disconcerting relief ,at the same time impressive and beautiful .

Thousands years old landscape emerged from the deep Mediterranean sea, which inundated this land to the foot Filabres mountain until two millions years, from then the rain ,wind and other climatic and geological factors ,all of them have shaped the current landscape of TABERNAS DESERT.

Once upon the time, when Tabernas lands was submerged over 500 meters of deep sea, place where they were settle down in the basin, sediments after continuous geological phenomenon were doomed to emerge and transform in a peculiar landscape, unique work by nature mother.

Over 3000 sunshine hours yearly, a rainfall rate of 200mm/year and temperatures ranging from -5ºC and 48ºC, the grey shade of the sedimentary material that forms promenades, ravines, gullies and other formations become ocher almost golden when gets dark.

In the heart of this apparent inhospitable landscape, brackish oasis were born here and there because of the huge quantity in concentration of salts in the subsoil, which are life fountain for birds, reptiles and other animals species who live and develop in Tabernas Desert.

About vegetable species, the extreme environmental conditions have led to disappearance of species as fan palms giving way to new plants of great scientific interest as Limonium, it´s strange way of survival, tamarisk, broom, doode, salsoa, capers without forgetting the parasitic “lamb’s tail” and “fox broomrape” as well as many other species perfectly adapted to the environment.
